EDUCATION OUTREACH/LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY
Education Outreach
UNASD’s Educational Outreach Committee is pleased to come to your school or classroom to introduce your students to the United Nations! We have recently developed two dynamic programs, Mobile Classroom and Classroom With-out Borders, for students ranging from elementary to high school levels.
Mobile Classroom
UNASD's Mobile Classroom will bring the countries of the United Nations closer to you than ever before. Through an interactive program which includes a UNICEF video/DVD, you will be able to introduce your students to the United Nations, without even leaving your classroom. The history, background, structure, and goals of the UN will be cov-ered in depth, with an emphasis on humanitarian efforts and conflict resolution.
This interactive program can be altered to fit your schedule. To schedule a visit, please contact .
Classroom Without Borders
Our Educational Outreach Committee has specifically developed Classroom Without Borders as a three-day workshop for middle and high school students, in order to the work of the United Nations and raise awareness about human rights, sustainable development, and peace.
Our engaged UN educators can facilitate educational development by addressing the broader objective of building and sustaining a culture of peace. In this effort, values, standards, and principles articulated in fundamental UN instru-ments - the UN Charter, Human Rights documents, the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the World Declaration on Education for All, etc. - are an integral part of this program.
Centered on developing the capacities of learners, Classroom Without Borders is relevant across educational disci-plines as it can be infused into traditional academic subjects such as literature, math, science, history, language, social sciences, and the arts.

Legislative Advocacy
In unison with our Education Committee, our Legislative Committee is dedicated to advocacy by educating the public and our legislators on UNASD’s mission and promoting policies to strengthen the United Nations. These include im-proving the U.S.-UN relationship, strengthening the instruments of human rights and international justice, achieving the Millennium Development Goals, and promoting action on climate change. Complimenting our work towards the ratification and implementation of UN Conventions like the Convention on all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), we advocate with UN Delegates every year at the UN Commission on the Status of Women to keep instruments strong and responsive to women's needs.
The UNASD Legislative Committee has met with Representatives Susan Davis and Bob Filner, and with the regional director of Representative Bilbray. The committee also works locally to include government representatives in our work and to promote policies that recognize the nexus between local action and global consequences, such as global warming, divestment from Sudan, and ending gender violence. We are currently advocating for Global Warming Legislation and UNITE.
UNITE calls on governments, civil society, women’s organizations, young people, the private sector, the media and the entire UN system to join forces in addressing the global pandemic of violence against women and girls. By 2015, UNITE aims to achieve the following five goals in all countries:
Adopt and enforce national laws to address and punish all forms of violence against women and girls
Adopt and implement multi-sector national action plans
Strengthen data collection on the prevalence of violence against women and girls
Increase public awareness and social mobilization
Address sexual violence in conflict
