Who We Are

The United Nations Association of San Diego (UNASD) serves as a resource for the citizens of the San Diego area on the broad agenda of critical global issues addressed by the United Nations and its agencies: peacekeeping, human rights, humanitarian relief, economic development, and education. The United Nations Association of San Diego is committed to educating the public about all the critical and essential work of the United Nations. With the help of our members and through public events, fundraisers, and symposia, we can create a stronger understanding and build greater international cooperation.

The United Nations Association (UNA-USA) is a non-partisan, non-profit organization founded over a half-century ago by Eleanor Roosevelt and other concerned Americans to provide a sampling of what the United Nations and its component bodies have faced and still face around the globe to help those in need.

The San Diego Chapter is centrally located in beautiful Balboa Park adjacent to the international cottages. Since 1960, the UN Building has been the home for the Chapter’s Eleanor Roosevelt Global Classroom and the International Gift Shop.

What We Do

We offer many opportunities to become an active member of our community and the world beyond.

Inspire

The UNA San Diego Chapter is one of the most active chapters in America. Our organization has collaborated with schools, universities, businesses and non-profits to educate and serve San Diego and communities abroad. We have successfully contributed computers to schools in Tanzania, implemented and hosted artistic, educational and cultural campaigns and even provided aid relief to the afflicted South East Asian community after the 2004 Tsunami.

Educate

The UNA-SD hosts a wide variety of events from community fundraisers to symposia discussing world issues such as poverty, hunger, public health, and terrorism.

Participate

We encourage you to get involved by visiting one of our annual events or joining one of our committees. You can help with business development, event planning, fundraising, copy writing, graphic design, creative campaign development, public speaking and so much more. UNA-SD offers a vehicle to contribute to society, build relationships and show your appreciation for our global community by using your skill set, talents or resources towards special programs and projects.

Involve

As a non-profit, volunteer organization, we greatly value your talents and contributions. The following is a list of just some of the UNA-SD projects and campaigns that offer opportunities for you to get involved and be a part of the greater world around you:

Our Mission

Our mission is to build better public understanding of – and support for – greater international cooperation through the United Nations within the San Diego community.

Our Philosophy

The United Nations was established in the aftermath of a devastating war, to help stabilize international relations and give peace a more secure foundation. Amid the threat of nuclear war and seemingly endless regional conflicts, peacekeeping has been and continues to be a fundamental priority of the United Nations.

While most of us are aware of the United Nations’ peacekeeping and humanitarian relief efforts, there are many other ways the UN affects people around the world. With a consortium of 192 sovereign states and the UN family of agencies working together, the UN works to alleviate disease, illiteracy, and poverty, ensure and promote human rights, protect the environment, fight drug trafficking, define safe standards for air travel, improve telecommunications, remove landmines, fight HIV/AIDs, and to protect children around the world.

The United Nations Association of the United States of America and the San Diego Chapter are committed to educating the public about all the critical and essential work of the United Nations. With the help of our members and through public events, fundraisers, and symposia, we can create a stronger understanding and build greater international cooperation.
