Joe Combs wrote: “When I joined the UNA in 1958, the world was full of enthusiasm about the U.N. My business with IBM took me to New York two or three times a year. Each trip back there would involve a visit to the U.N. It was
always interesting to stay in the hotels where the member delegates were and to have lunch in the delegates dining room at the U.N. The open meetings were always interesting to attend and listen
to the translations as the delegates spoke. On each visit I would purchase a doll in the gift shop from a different country and bring it home to my eldest daughter who was then in elementary school. She is now 55.
During my years as a member, I have fulfilled many functions to help the U.N. Association. These include serving on the Board of Directors for several years at various intervals. The Speakers Bureau was one of my favorite services. Speaking to schools and service clubs was a fun assignment as was the membership committee.
The U.N. has done a great job. We do need reform at the U.N. and I am hopeful and optimistic about it.”

On Saturday, April 23, the Education Committee sponsored an awards ceremony for multiple scholarship winners. Jonathan Wosen, of the Preuss Charter School, was a semi-finalist for the UNA-USA National High School Essay Contest and was honored for his article on
U.N. reform. In addition, our annual Annette I. Baughman Model U.N. college scholarships ($10,000) were awarded to three outstanding students from La Jolla High School. Congratulations to Harin Song, Mary Plant Thomas and David Tehrani. The ceremony was held during the Third Annual MUN High School Conference sponsored by PAXMUN and UNA-SD, which was attended by 150 students from 13 schools. The MUN Committee is already planning its Third Annual MUN Training Day on Sept. 16 to be held at the University of San Diego Law School.

As usual, the Women’s Equity Council was actively involved in activities commemorating Women’s History Month, beginning with the WEC’s delegation’s participa
tion in the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women in New York City at U.N. headquarters. Another event was the annual International Women’s Day Breakfast, March 8, which was a successful celebration cosponsored with the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice.
The Women’s Equity Council is considering ideas for the development of its annual program to celebrate Women’s Equality Day,
August 26, the 86th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United States. The most interesting plan is to present a program, especially for young women, on the importance of their right to vote and to explain the uniqueness of the California ballot with its initiatives (e.g., Proposition 82, an initiative constitutional amendment and statute). Also to be discussed is the goal of achieving at least 30 percent representation of women in local, state, and national elected offices, one of the 12 critical areas of concern that 189 countries adopted at the U.N.’s Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995. As an outcome of this August event, it is hoped that a few attendees will consider running for elected office! The WEC also is promoting the goal of 50:50 by 2020, and all participants will be invited to express their views on how to achieve that goal, with an emphasis on electing more women in November.
Another program currently being discussed is the WEC’s annual 16-day campaign to end violence against women, beginning with the U.N.’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Nov. 25, and ending on Human Rights Day, Dec.10.
To discuss these two programs and other events, all
U.N.A. members and friends are invited to participate in a planning session on

Our Fifth Grade classroom program, as a “Partner in Education” with the San Diego School District’s Balboa Park Program, continues to run smoothly. Thanks to the university student interns who teach our classes, we are able to maintain the program from September through July.
Our Outreach Program, which began about two years ago, is slowly expanding. We visit Forth Grade classes at Freese Elementary, a “Partner in Education” once a year and meet with a student group at the Museum School about every five weeks. Once a month, we hold a 2-hour workshop, Global Awareness for Young Women, for Cadette & Senior Girl Scouts in San Diego.
In May, there were two firsts. We did presentations in four Fifth Grade classes at La Jolla Country Day School and hosted a group of home schooled youngsters in our classroom. We look forward to further expansion of our Outreach Program.
The Education Committee would welcome new members–especially former teachers.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established on December 14, 1950 by the U.N. General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. In more than five decades, the agency has helped an estimated 50 million people restart their lives. Today, a staff of around 6,540 people in 116 countries continues to help 19.2 million people.
A special U.N. General Assembly Resolution was unanimously adopted in 2000 which designates June 20 every year as World Refugee Day in salute to the spirit and courage of the world’s refugees.

Karen Longstreth UNICEF Committee Chair
In the aftermath of World War II in Europe, China and the Middle East, some 60 million children were in desperate need. The urgency of their plight led to the creation of a special U.N. agency, UNICEF, in 1946. Its mission is the same as it was 60 years ago: to save, protect and improve children’s lives. Sixty years later, UNICEF operates in over 150 countries and territories.
Last year, the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina led to the historic decision by the U.S. government to accept an offer of aid from the United Nations. UNICEF’s first ever emergency response in the U.S. included the delivery of more than 2,000 School-in a Box and recreation kits to displaced children across the Gulf Coast.
In celebration of UNICEF’s 60th anniversary, our UNA-SD UNICEF Committee is looking at some new ways to fundraise for UNICEF. Our annual Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF drive in the fall will continue. Questions, ideas?? Contact me at longstreth@cox.net.
The U.N.A. International Gift Shop has had to discontinue all sales of UNICEF cards. The
U.S. Fund for UNICEF announced that as of June 19, Hallmark Gold Crown stores will be the primary outlet year-round for UNICEF cards.
While we have been proud to support UNICEF with card and gift sales for over 30 years, this change will enable UNICEF to reach more supporters through the new distribution agreement. The resulting cost savings combined with the expanded exposure from Hallmark stores across the country, will generate increased funds for UNICEF’s work in over 150 countries. Pier 1 and Ikea stores will continue to sell cards during the holiday season.
Thank you to all our loyal UNICEF customers for your support for so many years. The Gift Shop will continue to have Treat-or Treat boxes available in the fall, and will carry some limited books and literature about UNICEF. You can order UNICEF cards, gifts and catalogs on line at www.unicefusa.org or by calling toll-free 1-800-4UNICEF.
